TESTACCIO

Toil, calcio (football) and offal have long defined Testaccio, a left-leaning, working-class enclave flanked by Aventine Hill and the Tiber. This is the historic home of football team A.S. Roma and the city’s quarto quinto (offal) dishes, the latter served in what are some of Rome’s most authentic and revered trattorias and restaurants. Such carnivorous leanings hark back to the days when Testaccio housed the city’s slaughterhouse.

These days, weathered pensionati (pensioners) and earthy pizzaioli (pizza makers) rub shoulders with a growing number of filmmakers, artists and designers, all drawn to Testaccio’s cult-status eateries, pumping nightlife and enduring come-as-you-are attitude.
